Quitaque, TX, the Bison Capital of Texas, is located on Highway 86 about 95 miles from Amarillo, TX and 90 miles from Lubbock, TX. As you arrive on the

edge of town you will see a sign that welcomes you to Quitaque and also makes sure you know how to pronounce its name properly, "kitty quay". Charles

Goodnight is given credit for the name Quitaque, which he believed was an Indian word for "end of the trail". In 1982 Briscoe County was organized and

the town for Quitaque was surveyed and platted.

Quitaque is a quiet little town, and most people traveling through might wonder why anyone would waste their time to explore it, but oh, what treasures

they might miss. The biggest being Caprock Canyon State Park that is just a few miles North of town, and home to over 200 head of bison from the

Charles Goodnight herd. When you enter the park you will probably be on the lookout for bison, but the beauty of the rugged landscape reveals another

treasure of the area. Don’t stop looking too soon or you will miss, yet another treasure, the amazing paintings on the local buildings around town.

Ranching and farming are the major industries of this area. The people are friendly and hardworking. Quitaque and Turkey, the neighboring town, share a

school, Valley ISD. Valley is located 5 miles from each community. Valley School brings these two little towns together to make one big happy family, not

to mention the success of the Valley Patriots 6-Man football, basketball and other sports and activities.

Quitaque is a perfect place to leave your troubles at home and just come and enjoy the simple things of life. Come see our local treasures. There are

several local businesses that would love to serve you, so please check them out and let them know that you found them on Caprock Canyon Travel Guide.
